A web-based translation service bears the slogan :

“[Name of site] is an easy-to-use site for rapid translations where you can get the “gist” of foreign language text and web pages.”

The experminent is : by taking the Buddha quote …

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it – even if I have said it – unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”

Translating it to another language, like for example, French, then translating it back to English, and the result is :

“Does not believe nothing, do not import where you reads it, or that has says it – even if I has says it – unless it agrees with your clean and your clean.”

If I were Buddha I’d be thinking, “No, I don’t get the fucking gist, at all !”
