HALLOWEEN, festival on Oct. 31, eve of All Saints’ day or Hallowmas, originally a Celtic festival to mark the new year, welcoming the spirits of the dead and assauging supernatural powers. It was intoduced to the US by the Scots and Irish immigrants, and is now a children’s festival famous for “trick-or-treat”.
HAYDN, Franz Joseph (1732 1809), Austrian composer who established the accepted classical forms of the symphony, string quartet and piano sonata. The architect of classicism, Haydn nevertheless drew inspiration from folk music in many of his works. His greatest music combines vigor, lyricism and poignancy with frequent flashes of wit.
